Here's a little list of litter picked up from around waterways. Note that although cigarettes are number one, various forms of disposable beverage containers figure prominently on the list.

Reuseable containers, people. Reuseable. Or at least multi-serving containers poured into reuseable cups or bottles. Make it a habit.

In the city I live we pay to have garbage disposed by weight. So you pay like 3 times as much if you don't recycle your glass bottles.

That argument doesn't quite apply to the above situation, which is mostly about littering and not general garbage disposal. I wish more places had incentives similar to the one you are describing, though. In Seattle, garbage can size determines how much it costs to throw things away, and they are just beginning to implement fines for people who throw away recyclable items.
