While I was living in Texas, we inherited a toaster oven and stand mixer from S's aunt K. There's no telling how long she had either item, nor how much she used them, because they both arrived in excellent condition. We tend to use the toaster oven heavily, to reheat leftovers and to make cheesy toast and nachos, because the microwave oven that came with this rental is so huge that it took up a good 50% of the limited counter space. It's likely that the cheesy toast and nachos contributed to the untimely demise of a previous toaster oven in Arizona; they result in inevitable cheese spills and I suspect all of the the grease puts extra wear-and-tear on the heating elements.

Unfortunately, although in theory it should be straightforward to replace the heating elements in a toaster oven, in practice, it often isn't. Thanks, planned obsolescence.

All of which is to say, I cleaned out the toaster oven this morning.

I did also find a hair dryer yesterday, so by now I've also washed the oily parts of the cat and worked on drying her out. I can't tell how much of the mineral oil I actually managed to remove, but any amount will be an improvement. It's funny how cats don't seem to fully appreciate the benefits of a spa day that includes a relaxing bath and mani/pedi.

An enormous amount of cat hair came out when I washed the blanket that gets wrapped around the heating pad.

I still have a lot of vacuuming to do yet.

Foods to cook for the week:
Today: tepary bean hummus; pasta bake with roasted broccoli
Later: stuffed pumpkin; veggie roast thing. I may or may not do Thanksgiving with my CT family members, depending on how we're all feeling. Whatever we do, it will be low-key.

I have invited a family member up for Thanksgiving who can't do onions*, corn, or peanuts. The stuffed pumpkin recipe that I have is heavily onion-dependent. Main ingredients:

onions, breadcrumbs, Swiss cheese, sage, nutmeg, cream

Can you help me think of some riffs to replace the onions? So far I'm thinking celery.

...it looks like I'm going to have to brave the grocery shopping crowds again.



*Can't do onions, leeks, or shallots. Garlic is OK!
