English muffins and cat-scratchers
Sep. 29th, 2014 01:31 pmOn Saturday afternoon I finally had enough free time to head off to a Big Box Pet Store in search of some cat-scratching options for the resident kitties. From checking her claws, it looks to me like my cat, Emma, needs some better scratchables, and I've been noticing J's cat, Creature, employing her claws on the door molding.
I hate shopping for this category of item. After spending 20 minutes or so starting at overpriced products sold under the Martha Stewart Living brand, I finally decided to buy one of those $10 catnip-infused cardboard box scratchers and some sisal rope (from the Big Box Hardware Store next door). I also got two more soccer ball toys, because they're one of Emma's favorite things in the whole world.
The spoiled beast is pleased with her new perch:

The catnip helped.
I'm still deciding the best method for deploying the sisal rope for Creature. I'll use the advice here about wood-gluing it to a board.
J also convinced me to try making English muffins instead of buying them. It turns out they're very much like crumpets, except they get flipped over halfway through griddle-cooking. They're delicious when fresh off the griddle. By day two, they taste like regular English muffins, just as predicted by The Joy of Cooking.
We also experienced catastrophic wonton soup failure (inseparable wrappers), and highly successful lasagne construction.
This week:
-Get ready for travel to California (write two talks) and Arizona
-Give a presentation about using R to a graduate student engineering organization
-Review a manuscript
-Go rowing
-Work on the three current manuscripts
