May. 22nd, 2005 11:15 amWell, races in Sacramento were cancelled. Apparently, a huge amount of snowmelt ripped up the race course buoys, destroying the race course. The frustrating aspect of the cancellation is that the water was absolutely beautiful. This particular race course is one of the top racing venues in the country. As I stood on the shore with another rower, a double swept past us, moving quickly. Such a change from our humble concrete bathtub in Tempe.
Anyway, with the races cancelled, there wasn't a whole lot to do. I called up K and we managed a visit on Friday, which was great. She's doing research at UC Davis for the summer, so we prowled around downtown Davis for the evening. Downtown Davis is everything that downtown Tempe is not. There were pedestrians absolutely everywhere, and tons of local shops and restaurants. Trees and greenery abounded, and cars actually paid attention to pedestrians. We stumbled upon an incredible ceramics gallery, and stopped in to visit a used bookstore, where I found a book called Catflexing. It has been added to the wacky cat book collection.
Then, yesterday, I rode back to Tempe with the boat trailor--a nice, 14-hour drive. Thank goodness I don't own a car or need to drive around today. And this morning, T left for Costa Rica (I can't remember how many times I said goodbye, which is utterly ridiculous), so now the house is quiet with just me and the cats. So I think I shall finish reading A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson, and then perhaps I will pick up some supplies for ceramics this summer (a switch from painting for a little while, at least) and dawdle around the house. What a life.
