Jul. 11th, 2012 09:27 pmI have photos from last weekend I'd like to post, but haven't been in the right state to post them. Sigh. Such is life sometimes. On Monday, I wrote out a list of things I want to accomplish during the week both for life at home and life at school. Every morning I try to squeeze in just a few small projects, then just a few more, before it's time to go in to campus. Then I headed in to campus, lost a good chunk of the afternoon to a 2-hour meeting, and then headed out on the early side to catch the Monday Night Social Ride. Texas has been getting some fun weather, including heavy rainshowers on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and today. On Monday, the threat of rainshowers and lightning kept most people away from the Monday Night Social Ride, but then the weather really wasn't all that bad for the ride itself. By the time it wrapped up, and by the time I wrapped up stuff on campus and came home, there was just time for a late dinner and then I headed off to bed.
Tuesday night we had a crew leadership meeting, which was really good. I've said it before, I'm sure I'll say it again, this is a pretty amazing group of people to work with. We don't all necessarily agree on absolutely everything, but manage to talk things over and get things done. I rode my bicycle home from the meeting (managing to dodge the rainshowers yet again) quietly humming to myself about rowing. The next huge step for the team involves starting a nonprofit organization. We have a whole lot of people who are interested in helping out the team, and the team needs a whole lot of stuff, but it's a bit hard to get a lot of that work done directly through the university as a recreational sport.
The Rec Sports program is used to dealing with groups like the soccer team and triathlete team, not so much sports like rowing. More than anything, an equipment tragedy that happened on Monday has highlighted the team's need for a more secure structure for boat storage; one of the boats being kept in Georgetown for the sake of refurbishing it got picked up by winds from a storm cell and got thrown 30 feet away, which broke the boat's keel, snapped off the bow deck, and caused the decking to crack along all of the ribs. That's going to put the boat out of commission for the fall, in the very least, if not for an entire year. It's a big loss for a team that only has three other 8+s, one of which is an ancient Dorigo. Anyway, the team needs something closer to a boathouse. So, it needs a nonprofit organization, because people need to know where money is going. If it goes back into operations through Rec Sports, well, that's basically a money hole because those funds are used for the team's yearly operations.
So, yeah. That ate up Tuesday night. Today got eaten up by helping out one of the grad students with some stats work, plus trying to get miscellaneous logistical items accomplished in the lab, like ordering software and straightening out affairs for previous orders. Tedious stuff. Then I went to the rec center and erged for an hour or so.
It's hard to motivate myself to go home when nobody's at the house, other than a resentful cat who wants to know where I've been all day and who spends about 5 minutes yelling at me the minute I get home.
