Time for some photos. Here's how the caulking process went for the kitchen sink, once I got the caulk and caulk gun #2 to cooperate.
Sink overview - old caulk
It looks pretty disgusting by now, and probably contains a lot of tasty insect snacks.
Remove old caulk by cutting it away with a utility knife
Sometimes you can just peel it off by hand
Most of the caulk, removed
Cleaning out the groove with a rag on a screwdriver
Caulking success
Not a perfect caulk job, but much, much better than before!

Waaaay better. Congratulations!
A razor scraper -- one of the type that use old single razor blades as its cutting tool -- does a good job of the bead removal process because it's so easy to slide into tiny places.
