I finally planted some tomato and pepper seeds this morning. I'll post some gardening photo updates sometime soon, once I have a chance to upload the photos to this computer, and then you will be able to see how I'm trying to start these plants. When I informed
scrottie of my plans to start seeds, he recommended sterilizing the soil to prevent damping-off, a fungal disease. However, his recommendation came after I'd mixed potting soil with worm soil.
There are a number of reasons to use worm dirt when gardening. One of the main reasons is that the worms don't kill beneficial soil microbes as they digest plant material and make it available to new plants. Sterilizing the soil would basically undo a lot of the benefits of using worm dirt in the first place.
So, no sterilization this time. If nothing comes of this first batch of seeds, I'll try again, especially if I see signs of damping-off among this first set of plantings.
