Shopping, thriftily
Jan. 9th, 2012 10:46 amDuring Saturday's thrift-store rounds, I came across a small, wood secretary desk with drawers underneath it, for $80, at the Habitat for Humanity's Re-Store. I didn't buy it, and now I can't stop thinking about it. I might even be able to haul it back to the house in the bike trailer. Maybe. They don't deliver. It could be a useful catch-all for mail and such.
Why didn't I buy it? Because I had to go and remind myself of the numerous other items on my List of Things to Acquire. The whole list is overwhelming me right now, and I need to pay for gum surgery first. After that, I'm feeling pressure to save up for and get a randonneuring bike (ASAP NOW WHY HAVEN'T I ORDERED IT YET ALREADY?), but in the meantime I also want fenders for the Jolly Roger and larger pannier covers. I've wanted them for a long while. It would be nice to be able to go places in the rain, without having to worry about getting covered in road grit. Another potential solution would be to fix the derailleur on Old Faithful. Sigh. I'm going to need new tires soon, too. My plan at the moment is to wait until the end of the month, when I can see how much I have left over after paying for basic expenses, like groceries and utilities.
Thrift store items throw a wrench in the overall plan, because there's no guarantee that that sweet desk will still be there at the end of the month, or even tomorrow. My primary thrifting goal is to find an adequate vacuum cleaner. No luck with that one last Saturday. Meanwhile, a lot of my belongings are still sitting around in piles or cardboard boxes because I don't have anywhere to put them. It's an obnoxious situation.
