So. Back in my undergrad days, we got to use PINE to check our e-mail. But it was phased out towards the end of those days. I was sorely disappointed. After all, if you're in the business of preventing computer viruses, and in the business of using key commands instead of pointing and clicking, PINE is the way to go.

Anyways.

I just learned that I can use PINE to check my ASU e-mail. Score! I'm absurdly happy.

You know, you're my kind of woman. (: PINE was my first experience with email too, we used it on ECF to check our email. When I couldn't make it to the lab, I could use my modem to dial into the computer network from home, like a BBS. Classic stuff.

Now that I run Communix on my computer at home, I could use PINE whenever I wanted to read my email. But I've become a slave to pretty interfaces and now use Thunderbird instead. It'd be cool to go back to PINE, but it'd be like going back to an old girlfriend*, it just wouldn't be the same any more.

* or so they tell me

What can I say? I'm a true nerd. (:

Would Thunderbird let you use keyboard commands? That's what I've really missed. They're so much faster and easier than pointing and clicking, in my humble opinion. Pretty interfaces are nice, but I'm in it for the text of it all. (:

Oh, the good part is that I can switch back to our e-mail GUI at any point if I want to, which is most convenient for traveling purposes.

Nerds rock. (:

I'm pretty sure Thunderbird has keyboard shortcuts for several functions, but I don't know what they all are. I also don't know whether it'll have shortcuts for the stuff one would want shortcuts for. I would seriously hope so, but a lot of GUI programs seem to think that keyboard commands are meant to be used to activate the GUI elements (hence my using the term 'shortcuts' where you use 'commands') which, while somewhat useful, is really sub-optimal.

... well, I found a list. I'll have to study it myself for a while before I let you know if the shortcuts are of any use. (: Though I find their choice of Outlook Express for comparison to be highly discriminatory against us PINE-lovers.

Did you ever use PICO? It was my first text editor, and I chose it because it was so similar to PINE. Since then, I've taken leave of my senses and prefer vi. Making the next obvious question, do you have a preferred editor? Or am I outgeeking you now? (:

... as a matter of fact, yes, I am single! How could you tell?

Well, I might have to consider Thunderbird. Okay, I'm done considering. I'll stick with Pine and keyboard commands for now--it's so much fun! (: I have to say, I've just grown tired of all of the pointing and clicking. It gets old.

And, yes, I've used PICO, but mainly to create statistics files for SAS, a UNIX-based stats package. Beyond that, I don't really do much text editing/coding/etc, so I haven't developed an editor preference. So congratulations! You have officially outgeeked. (:
