Jan. 9th, 2005 07:15 pmLatte cravings got the better of me today, so I went over to 3 Roots to hang out for a while. This is a place that doesn't know the meaning of "short" or "tall," so it wasn't so surprising that instead of good foam on my latte I got soap bubbles. It would be too much to expect anything even approaching a design, so I'm going to have to end that debate. I'm tempted to leave them information about CoffeeGeek.com.
After I left, I started walking up Mill Avenue to visit an ATM, but the draw of seeing Town Lake kept my feet moving down to the bridges. The lake, which is normally a cloudy greenish-blue, was a pale, tan, muddy color. The view from the bridge seemed pretty normal--the water in the lake looked calm, but the occasional item of debris hinted otherwise. I walked down to the west dam, the lower edge of the lake, to see how things looked there.
One time last year, when it rained really hard, one of the four sections of the lower dam was lowered slightly to let some water cascade out of the lake. This time, all four sections were deflated, and the silty water formed a broad cascade that ended in a foamy froth. I'm guessing the water wasn't too deep, but it was definitely in a hurry to get somewhere.
Sitting there, watching the deceptively calm water of the lake and the churning waterfall, reminded me of how much I love water. It also reminded me of how dangerous water can be.
