Yip-yip

1. Our neighbors have a yip-yip dog that is out in the yard right around when I want to fall asleep. I really want to buy one of those silent dog whistles just to see what it will do.

2. I'm a wee bit busy these days, with teaching and the neverending research-related activities. And baking. Damned baking. I made cupcakes on Sunday for a lab-mate's birthday, complete with bee frosting, and tonight I baked an apple pie which had better taste good OR ELSE. It's for a potluck tomorrow for a visiting seminar speaker who is really cool. I wonder if my baking skills will help me advance my career in any way, since I keep giving all of the baked goods away to cow-orkers. Do they really deserve it? Well, some do. "Oh yeah, hire her--she can bake!" If all else fails, I guess I have a back-up career that is also bereft of financial benefits.

I shouldn't really complain--I got to play Scrabble yesterday with the gang, and we'll celebrate the Crafternoon on Sunday. I guess it's just the teaching that's getting to me, as well as the fact that free weekend time has spontaneously evaporated through the end of the year.

When I was ten we used to live next to a yip dog that woke me up every morning around 5 am. I fantasized about tying a hunk of meat to its back in the hopes that some vicious raccoon or bald eagle would take it away and end my misery. To this day, my family still refers to them as "drop kicks", a result of my wishing to take matters into my own hands and boot it off our neighbor's balcony.
