I recently came across a piece from The Guardian about Writer's Rooms. It's a splendid opportunity to snoop through where other people go to get work done.

My own work habits are somewhat nomadic--I've got my desk (multipurpose table) at home, but I usually don't write here. I also have my chosen landing spot at school, a desk space in the ant lab. There's another desk in our second lab space (we have two because chemistry and ants don't mix well) which I have been known to occupy when there are too many people in the ant lab, although often the neighboring lab space gets noisy as well. Then there's what should technically be my desk, a cubicle in the middle of a room of 21 cubicles. I'll occasionally use the stapler or hole punch that are in there, but I find I cannot work well in such environments, as Cubicleville is full of sporadic chatter that prevents me from concentrating.

Some notes:
-Discussions of computers versus other methods--authors generally feel strongly about writing by hand (there are exceptions)
-Some write facing a window, others write facing away from a window
-Nomadism is rare, although it occurs
-Most spaces have some "clutter," though some are austere

O, to have a room devoted to such matters. Sometimes, when I'm sitting at my desk, I see my kitchen as that little place over off to one side where I can find a bit more food to keep working, or where I can heat up water for some tea. Those are pleasant moments. More often than not, I get angry at my two desk chairs for not being ergonomic enough, or I get frustrated with my desk for being too low. I've considered propping it up; perhaps I'll do that right this minute.
