Sep. 9th, 2007 06:08 pmLast Wednesday at our weekly Scrabble game, my friend L gave me a glass jar full of worms. Now you know me--this was cause for great excitement, not cause to leap up on my chair and shriek. You see, L started a worm bin a few months earlier and became a bit obsessed with her new pets. Since her bin was so successful, and since we like to discuss such matters, she thought that perhaps I'd enjoy some worms for my compost bin. Well, I kept that jar on my kitchen counter through the end of the week, and didn't have the heart to just chuck those poor, helpless worms into the compost bin, where who-knows-what could happen to them (I just poked around in there a little bit and it was teeming with GRUBS! I hope they're good guys, because they were EVERYWHERE).
So I read up a little about worms on the 'nets and built myself a small worm bin. I know, I know, perhaps it's a little over the top, considering that I already have a compost. This just seems more...fun. In the very least it will give the cat something to watch and sniff at. I gave them some scraps from a stew I made last night and some other vegetable matter. Now I shall just have to wait and see...
Next week I'm also planning on planting some herbs. I really wanted to plant them this weekend, but I'm afraid it's still a touch too hot, so I'm making myself wait at least one more week. Even though my success with the basil over the summer was limited, I'm going to try growing more of it, as well as some parsley, chives, and cilantro. On Friday night at the Artwalk my friends and I passed a basil BUSH, so I know it can be done, and done to the point of excess. If all else fails, I'll have to find a birdcage so I can grow herbs indoors without the cat gnawing them to stubble.
