To sweep or to scull
Feb. 5th, 2007 02:22 pmK and I have both been recruited to row in a Tempe Town Lake boat at the San Diego Crew Classic (whether or not things will work out is uncertain right now). I was reminded of this just now because I have a brand-new blister on the palm of my right hand as a souvenir from rowing sweep (that's one oar instead of two) in a four this morning.
The last time I rowed sweep was in a head race in the fall, briefly. It's such a different experience. Suddenly, the balance of the boat is subject to whims outside of my direct control, and I have to pay much more careful attention to timing and matching. On the other hand, it's much easier to get leverage, feel connected to the water and pry the boat forward, and I don't have to steer or think as hard.
It's just different.
