I think I like to make chivalrous door-holding as awkward as possible. Not intentionally, mind you. I just do--with pretty much equal frequency, I'll: let someone hold a door for me, attempt to hold doors for other people, or fail to participate in the courtesy known as door-holding.

Maybe there's some deeper symbolic meaning to all this.

You and I know what's up.

This morning, I held a door for a very tall (like 6'8") man. He blushed and stuttered and seemed like he didn't quite know what to say until "I..uh...thank you" tumbled out of his mouth, and then he stood in line behind me in Starbucks, shifting from foot to foot and squirming and smiling.

Best. Thing. Ever.

I work in a building that has heavily tinted glass doors. So if you're inside, you can see people coming at you from the outside but if your outside you can't see the people on the inside. This creates some interesting door holding dilemmas. The person on the outside is always startled if you open the door for them and hold it, and they're always startled if you don't open the door for them as you are standing RIGHT THERE when they walk in.

When I need a break, I often loiter in the lobby to see what fun will ensue...

I'll hold doors open for both genders. Why not, after all - it's simple courtesy. And in today's cultural climate, I'd say expressions of courtesy are a good thing, irregardless of gender politics.

I consider it rude to let a door close on someone who is just a couple steps behind. Many people are oblivious though. Often I grab the door as an oblivious person is letting it close, and I'll say "Thank you" loudly, some of them remain oblivious even then, and either still don't realize that I'm behind them or are pretending they didn't hear me.

And when people are going opposite directions, the door can really only be held open by the person the door opens towards. I'll try to go through a door that opens away from me, and some moron will be on the other side, and will try to hold the door open for me, but sometimes they don't move the fuck out of the way! lol.
