Last night's party was good. It's nice to be able to say that unequivocally. A couple of people were super-enthusiastic about the last-minute pirate theme: my friend M went so far as to steal dangly things off of his ceiling fans to drape on his ears as earrings, while K created an origami parrot to wear on her shoulder. Several people got a wee bit violent and broke the plank, so there could be no more walking of the plank. And I heard the same pirate joke approximately 20,953 times: a pirate walks into a bar with a tiller sticking out of his fly...

But I laughed every single time. People were appreciative of the Garage, but mostly migrated into the main house, so at the end of my night (but not the end of the party) I was able to draw the curtains and fall asleep to the hum of the air conditioner and the muted sound of conversations.

It has been interesting to suss out the new grads as well--one who I did not find too remarkable at first turned out to be an opinionated artiste and conversationalist. That was probably the most pleasant surprise of the evening.

At one point, two enthusiastic pirates insisted that I join them in a rousing rendition of "What do you do with a drunken sailor?" (we put him in bed with the captain's daughter and boiled him in oil 'till he grew a fin) It only takes a little rum to get me singing, I guess.

I spent today in the Pinal Mountains, flipping over rocks and collecting ants. The sound of the wind in the trees was calming. At one point, someone found an army ant colony and then found three other ant species all under the same huge rock. I wish I had had my camera at that moment: ten entomologists, with their faces in the dirt and their butts sticking up in the air. I still believe we are less eccentric than birders ("twitchers," Ta calls them).

There was a brief, gentle rainshower in the middle of the day, followed by clouds and fog. The sensation of water dropping on my skin was comforting as well.
