Dear Internets,

What are your favorite foods to eat while out camping? I'm looking for meal ideas for a 4-day trip. We will be eating pie in the middle of everything because we are going to a town where one must eat pie.

tortellini. Plus you can get the vacuum packed pesto sauce to go with it. Just need to boil water. Though water can be at a premium sometimes when camping....

Remember foil dinners at CYO camp?

Oh slurp do I ever remember those foil dinners! Now that would be an idea except in the southwest we cannot light campfires because if we do, the entire region will erupt into a giant ball of flame. And flaming cacti do not make for pretty decor.

But the tortellini--I think you are onto something there. Water won't be a problem where we're headed, thank goodness!

We can do campstove dinners. The pasties are a fantastic idea. Any suggestions on crust recipes??

You could make some kind of pasty before-hand and then eat that. You can make vegetarian and meaty ones and they are incredibly tasty.

Whether over the coals of a dying campfire (which you don't have) or the grill of a warm camp stove that's just been turned off, barbecued bananas are a nice treat. Each banana goes in a tinfoil boat, with butter and lots of brown sugar on the banana, and added marshmallows, chocolate chips, nuts, etc. to taste. Don't cook for too long or you'll liquefy the banana.

If you're preparing them far in advance you'll probably want to use bananas that still have a hint of green, since they ripen quickly.

There's a coincidence. I'm going to do a bit of civilised camping the week after next. Our first try en famille. Looking forward to it with trepadation.
