Well, I believe I have determined one of the factors contributing to my foot troubles (metatarsalgia, you may recall--if you're my mother). Biking. Yep. That's right. My foot hurts again after all of the biking I did last week. On the other hand, I know what to do to make things better--I just need to put a little bit of padding in the shoes that I wear whilst biking. Or I could just get the foot amputated.

I was going to work on a sewing project yesterday, but ended up doing all sorts of other odds and ends instead: cleaning and lubing my bike chain (only had to scrub and de-grease 3 times before the chain was clean--yeesh); cleaning the shower (lots of buildup on the glass--pretty gross); talking to my brother, yadda yadda yadda. But it was a nice day because I rested as well.

Now it's time to run around the lab and organize and such. We finally have permanent furniture in there, so we can actually move in (only a few months later...). Whee!

I've found that the bicycle is capable of straining seemingly any part of the body if you give it the chance. It's all about making sure you're warm, but of course sometimes it's more than just that.

Do you use bicycle footwear with the stiff soles? Actually this is one problem I have not had so I don't know the trick to that one.

This foot injury is one that I believe results from overuse and too much pressure on the ball of one's foot. I have regular pedals on my bike and have been wearing tennis shoes, and did a heck of a lot of biking last week, so I'm not too surprised that my foot has flared up again. The interesting part is that the injury is pretty easy to mend--I just have to wear a piece of padding in my shoe in just the right place to relieve pressure on the injured part of my foot. But I haven't been able to eradicate the problem completely.

I've been thinking it would be interesting to see if bike shoes would make a difference. I'm sure that I lose a lot of energy because my foot isn't well-attached to the pedal. But that's when I run into the problem that my bike isn't worth spending the money for better shoes/pedals because it's a steel-framed bike with mountain bike tires and it weighs a ton and I mostly use it for commuting purposes. Some day I will get a real bike. Some day...

The shoes (or sandals) distribute pressure throughout your whole foot, it's pretty cool I think. They make them so that you can attach a cleat for things like SPD pedals, but you don't have to and the rigidity of the soles is only that much more helpful if you're not pulling up on the pedals.
