Subtle signs of early spring [gardening]
Mar. 15th, 2021 04:10 pmI'm so grateful to the prior occupants of Grandma House for planting this small patch of snowdrops, just so we know that spring is about to get underway:

I never did harvest last year's Brustmas Tree. We'll probably let the Brustmas and kale do their thing again this year.

There are small leaf buds on the currant bush. There are also small leaf buds on the fig tree but I didn't take its picture.

Tomorrow's lab involves studying hemoglobin from cow's blood and hemocyanin from horseshoe crab blood. I have a cluster of students who are quarantining or trying to be really careful because of even more Covid cases on campus. We've had a substantial spike in cases on campus over the past 2 weeks. I think it's one of those situations where students are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I do believe the majority of students on campus are doing their darndest to be careful. But there are also students who are gathering in groups that are too big, indoors. There are zero cases among employees, so once again it doesn't look like classroom spread is the culprit.
What I really need is a remote control camera robot that students can control and drive around the lab. That would be much more fun, like a VR-lab.
Maybe I should ask if anyone has a Roomba we can borrow.
In any case, in spite of being vaccinated, you won't see me taking off my mask in public anytime soon. Not until prevalence in the community drops very low. I'm going to estimate that it's going to take another 4-6 weeks before that happens. Given that it's been a year already, that's not really all that much longer. And it's so much shorter than it could have been thanks to vaccines.
