The most recent issue of Science contains an article on an effect labeled the "deliberation-without-attention" hypothesis. Basically, researchers found that when people make simple decisions (like choosing between different towels or different sets of oven mitts), they make better decisions after conscious thought. In contrast, when people make choices about more complex matters (such as choosing between different houses or different cars), they make better decisions based on unconscious thought ("purchases of complex products were viewed more favorably").
On an entirely unrelated subject, the article about blogging that I linked to the other day makes me more conscious of the fact that if I don't post with some sort of regularity, my lj will disappear into internet oblivion. But what if I run out of new, interesting things to say? Then I suppose I must revert to
