What the FUCK do we know?*
Feb. 9th, 2006 10:29 am*The original title of the original film, which was changed because its makers realized that it would probably offend/alienate the audience they were trying to target.
Anyhow. As ya'll probably know, the extended sequel to What the BLEEP is out in theaters these days. Here is
annikusrex's review of the sequel, which is pretty amusing. On a more serious note, here is her followup on interactions with one of the producers and one of the talking heads in the sequel.
On the one hand, I'm fine with people choosing to believe the sorts of things presented in films like What the Bleep. Morons. On the other hand, I'm a bit dismayed by the sort of scientific illiteracy in this country that causes people to blindly accept any views/arguments presented by someone claiming to be an authority on the subject at hand.
A real problem is this: let's say that a bunch of logic-minded scientists set out to create what I would perceive to be a more grounded perspective on human understanding of what we know.
It would be boring and a box-office flop.
That's why people make this kind of bullshit. It appeals to us in the same way that anthropomorphizing penguins appeals to us. Maybe somewhere in the back of our theoretically rational minds [I never claim to be rational] we cringe at our own behavior, but we still do it.
Damn. This whole thing is making my philosophical-itis flare up again, which often leads to an existential crisis and the inevitable philosophy hangover.
In reality (ha!), I'm just mad because What the Bleep: Down the Rabbit Hole is playing at the local "art" theater (it replaced Brokeback Mountain), and I'm guessing that it will play for a full year, just like What the Bleep did when it came out. Damn you, Phoenix, and your utter lack of entertainment and culture.
This post is entirely fictional and you never read it. BING!
