When the alarm went off at 5 am, I heard wind outside and opened up the blinds to the flicker of lightning. Shortly thereafter, the rain began to fall.

My bike commuting setup for Arizona isn't quite as water-resistant as my bike commuting setup for New York, so I took my time in the morning for as long as I could before determining that I'd need to ride through the rain.

I became grateful for two things:

1. The decision to wear a separate set of clothes for bike commuting vs. work. That means I can get wet and grimy during the commute, but then clean up once I get to work.

2. The giant sinks in the research labs here. See: Thing #1.

On a whim, I took the Cross-Cut Canal to the Mill Ave Bridge instead of 68th Street to the Rural Road Bridge. The rainy creosote smells, the peace and quiet of being off-road, and the views made it all worthwhile.

It got pretty drenchy down here in Tucson, as well. Managed to bike it between bursts, at least.
