I want to babble about the rowing marathon on Saturday. Lots of stories to tell, and it wound up being a wonderful day. I had 3 blisters pop and wound up a little creaky, but really it was just fantastic and the Wild Blue Yonder treated me well.
But it's a Monday and I have 3 hours of Zoom interviews for a hiring committee, an exam to finish writing, and That Giant (virtual) Stack of Grading. Yeah, that one. So yeah.
So I had a vague memory of starting to hear an odd noise and feel an odd feeling when I got home from the boathouse on Saturday. With all of the hustle and bustle I didn't pay it much heed, until this morning when I got back on my bike to go to morning practice. It felt a bit like a rear wheel wobble and hop, which can be caused by any number of things, so I pulled over at the corner by the traffic light near the house to take a look.
Cracked rim.
It is NOT a good idea to keep riding on a cracked rim, especially not the way this crack looked. Failure does not look pretty. So I sighed, texted our coach, and turned around. There was no telling how long it would take me to get Froinlavin set up to ride. I'd been thinking that poor Froinlavin hadn't been getting any attention this year, anyway.
After I got air back in her tires, I took Froinlavin around the block. She was happy to be out of the stable. So I texted again and set out for practice about 20 minutes late.
The water was absolutely beautiful this morning. Flat, with fresh, crisp air.
There was that one point where I narrowly missed a giant tractor tire floating down the river. But other than that, it was good to be out. We only have so many more days left before we pull the docks in again.
Frodo is definitely due for a bunch of TLC. Now's the time, I guess. I'm going to order the next wheel from a friend who is better-acquainted with my riding style and who knows what's what when it comes to good wheels and rims.
I'm also going to have to be more vigilant about cleaning my brake pads this winter, sigh.
