When I woke up this morning and checked my texts, there were a couple messages from teammates who said, "Rainy, cold. Erging at home."

I put on a couple extra layers, as I am wont to do when it might be hard to leave the house, and headed out.

The water was calm and flat and there wasn't even enough of a sprinkle to call it a drizzle. On Fridays Coach Y has been having me do sets of 2-min pieces, where the rest time between pieces keeps getting shorter and shorter. Last time it was 1 minute between; today it was 30 seconds between, plus, "Do as many as you possibly can."

I thought about the Serious Double while I did the pieces, by myself. In any other year, by this time of year, they'd be hitting the peak of their annual training plan, which calls for ___ total minutes of interval pieces each week. Their bread-and-butter would be either 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off, or 90 seconds on, 30 seconds off. So 2 minutes on, 30 seconds off isn't all that far off.

I miss those ladies, so I just sent them a "Hiiiiiiiiiiii" email.

When we all got back to the boathouse, Coach Y said he had preliminary news that one of his good friends and fellow coaches in Boston might have just had a heart attack and died while out rowing. This morning, the internet confirms:

On the one hand, I respect what Coach Y has said about that being one of the best ways to go. On the other hand, it's always too soon, and especially too soon and too close to home for Coach Y in this case. His friend N was pretty health-conscious and just beginning to be able to enjoy retirement.

I didn't find out about the status of this country's president until after I got to work this morning. I'm inclined to agree with those who have already made points about some of the consequences if overall this means the vice-president winds up taking the reigns.
