Small pleasures [gardening]
Sep. 18th, 2020 08:45 amSmall pleasures are what I've got right now.
Wednesday night, when I got home from work at around 8:30, I glanced at the spot where the Dark Dahlia* lives to see how it was doing.
I didn't see any evidence of the spot where the new buds had been.
I may have uttered a couple of curse words under my breath. Who takes someone else's dahlias, anyway?
After I set my bike down and came back over to inspect the carnage, I discovered that the plant had just gotten blown underneath its neighboring rhubarb.
I skipped Thursday morning rowing practice so I actually got to see it in daylight the next day.

The rasbperry canes also have a whole bunch of raspberries on them, in various stages of ripeness, which is pleasing because the raspberries also got off to a slow start this year. And the hot pink dahlia is still going strong.
Altogether I think the two main changes I would make for the garden next year would be to grow more basil in the pepper patch, and keep at it with the soil amendments. I also now have better supplies for next year's tomato stakes. And I'll probably advocate for growing some paste tomatoes.
This garden plot isn't especially huge, but if it's managed well it's still possible to fit a lot in.
