There was a tiny, sliver crescent moon this morning, almost bloodred, in the sky over the Hudson as we put our boats in in the chill, dark morning. Also something glowing brightly in the sky nearby - a planet?
The water was calm, flat. As we rowed north, the mists wafting up off of the river started to get thicker and thicker, so we turned our noses back to the south.
I barely noticed a floating tree in time. I had just enough time to lift up my starboard oar to glide over the top of it. If I had been 6 feet closer to shore, it would have been a very different morning.
We haven't gone south in a while and I've forgotten how to navigate that stretch of the river.
