Wildflower whimsy [gardening]
Sep. 8th, 2020 02:29 pmWhen all is said and done, I think I have to conclude that the wildflower garden didn't really do a whole lot this year. This is probably peak bloom that you're looking at:

Full marks for variety, but a rather paltry showing otherwise, and not exactly wildflowers. Two marigolds, a hint of bachelor's button, and ?zinnias?.
That's okay. The whole point of that patch of soil was to just throw some seeds in and see what came up. There *is* a small, white quasi-perennial in the mix, too, which is pleasing. According to its packaging there was only a partial chance it would come back after the freezing cold of winter...but it did come back and has put out a ton of cute little white flowers.
The late-planted sunflower plants are juuuust starting to make flowers. Are the hot pink flowers cosmos?

The hot-pink dahlia continues to be a champ. Go, hot pink dahlia, go! I shall save your roots this winter and plant you again next year.
The Dark Dahlia might actually flower after all:

It seemed like the hyssop took a long time to germinate and grow. It has some nice flowers now. I was wondering about its fate in the long term, but I see that it's mint family plant, which suggests that it might be able to keep going once it gets established.
(pictured here along with some lettuce that went to seed some time ago)

We have replanted the window boxes with more lettuce seeds. The window boxes should be fairly simple to bring indoors once it starts to get too cold.
