Down by the River [rowing]
Sep. 1st, 2020 10:47 amSo far, the best rule of thumb I can come up with is, you just never know what you're going to encounter when you go down by the river here.
This morning, as we were getting ready to launch, I noticed a small powerboat motoring southbound. It waked the dock while I was trying to put my outside oar in the oarlock, but its wake wasn't nearly so egregious as the wake given off by a larger power yacht last week, so I shrugged it off. I did notice that the boat didn't have any nighttime navigation lights going. It's dark until around 6 am now.
The other rowers around me say the small explosive noises that happened a minute or two later were some kind of gunshots. I can never, ever tell if it's gunshots or fireworks or a car backfiring.
The most charitable interpretation of events so far is that the people in the boat were illegally goose hunting.
This was the first morning since last Thursday that I actually got to row. Yesterday morning I worked with a person who is new to sculling.
I think my new workflow will look something like the following: get to work in the morning, record at least one lecture video, hold office hours and prep for lecture, lecture, write/grade assignments, go home and eat dinner and feed the cat, write the next lecture video, go to sleep. If I'm lucky get up and go rowing before work.
The washing machine is failing but I don't have the bandwidth to deal with that until next weekend. I have enough clean clothes to last until then. I squeezed in a Scrabble game with S on Sunday and managed to do most of the household chores aside from any sweeping or mopping.
There's probably something I should be doing right now other than blogging.
At least Emma seems to be eating a reasonable amount of food. For now. As long as I get home early enough to feed her in the evenings. Still pretty touch-and-go.
I am way too grumpy. This is a warning sign and it cannot last.

Date: 2020-09-01 03:18 pm (UTC)I love that you organize in this way, the way you visualize your day.
I do the same thing. Except I suspect that you then follow visualization with action.
Which is where I fall a bit short, uh, quite often.
Hope the grumpiness subsides and you have a good day. Wish me a productive one, lol...
