The blarghs:

-My dad's not doing so great - tumor progression in his lungs. I feel small and mortal and so very far away.

-The long to-do list for various things in and around the house that I don't feel motivated to tackle in the evenings. At least S made it to the hardware store today, finally. I have been missing that item because of limited hours and running away from my responsibilities to go on a bike ride. We need to get groceries this evening. And cat food. I should probably be cleaning out and changing the cricket bins tonight, too. Oh, and it flooded again last weekend, so I need to re-steam clean the two carpets I tried to store down there. I put them higher up on a set of plastic shelves, but apparently the rolled-up carpets decided to buckle in the middle during the weekend rainfall. Then hopefully S can help me transfer them into the attic.

-Putting my syllabus together has been a bit more involved than I'd anticipated. I'm getting there, but after a certain point today, my brain just gave up on it.

-I need to get underway with ordering stuff and doing stuff for my research space, but I feel slightly overwhelmed by starting. This involves things like figuring out whether I can order stuff on eBay and then get reimbursed for purchases later, and what kinds of things I can do in the teaching lab across the hall vs. what I need to do in my own space. Some of that ties into...

-Boy is moving expensive. I have that whole feeling of, "It would be REALLY useful to have Item _____, but whyyyyyyy am I buying more new things???" So I am putting off buying many of those things. For instance, two out of three sets of bicycling shorts called it quits last week, just as I start to seriously bike commute again. Not to mention figuring out where to buy Item ________. This one mostly requires some patience. I'll first get paid in early September, and it sounds like that's when they'll also cut me a reimbursement check for at least part of my moving expenses. I wish that was calibrated according to the distance moved, but it isn't. All told, I have savings, but I reeeeaally hate to dip into savings.

-I feel like I'm only making sluggish progress on research/paper-writing, too. Hmm, I wonder why that is [sarcasm].

-I hope this lingering cough is from the head cold, and isn't some other problem.

-I did manage to make myself call a place to schedule a haircut. Once that's done, time for an expedition to the DMV (or is it the MVD here? Or the RMV??). Benefits won't kick in until September, either, so I'll put off other appointments until then.

Gah, I'm sorry. If you need, like, whole grain pastries and balloons delivered locally via bicycle to your Dad or something (once we don't have Beijing air any more), let me know. I have all the sympathies; my close friend with cancer had her surgery yesterday and I was here in Chicago for it and aargh.

It's the DMV. ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. Love to you both. It's hard to be away from those we love when their health is precarious.

I picked up my kitty’s ashes yesterday and I’ve had nothing but blarghs since then.

So how do you authoritatively determine that bike shorts are done? My coworkers and I have a wide variety of opinions on this, many of which are short-circuited by spouses who make that decision unilaterally.

The variable opacity problem is exactly how a lot of ours meet their end.
