New theories
Jan. 25th, 2016 03:31 pmFor a long while, I didn't really get many/any messages in my gmail spam folder. Now I am starting to see more. I don't know if this reflects a shift in spamming capabilities or not, but I have an alternative hypothesis. If spam filtering is so effective that most of us don't actually see any spam anymore (it's detected and filtered out even before it reaches our spamboxes), we start taking that facility for granted, and start to forget the reason we all got gmail accounts in the first place. [There's also the whole "training the spam filter" element, of course; I do occasionally find legitimate messages in there, usually sent from Hotmail or Yahoo accounts.]
Similarly, I am starting to wonder if Microsoft tweaked a whole bunch of idiotic formatting baloney in order to make users of Microsoft products more aware of the fact that they are using Microsoft products, as they have to hunt around and find various menus and icons and drop-downs to figure out how to undo the irritating automated tools and formatting.
