A paywalled interview, but if you can access it, I recommend it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/18/magazine/ayana-elizabeth-johnson-interview.html

I thought I'd blogged previously about Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson's Ted Talk, but I can't seem to quickly dig up that previous post. To me, she is mobilizing in a way that many other climate change experts and activists are not.

I would start to pull out quotations from this interview, but if I do, I'm just going to wind up quoting most of it.

I'm not going to play the ukulele and sing, however.*

I was really looking forward to going bike camping this weekend, but we're in another day of poor air quality today, and I just don't think I'm up for an entire day out biking in an N100 mask. Ugh.

The cats are really annoyed that all of the windows and doors are closed.

Long solo ride tomorrow if the air quality manages to get any better. I need to be getting in miles on my bike right now in preparation for PBP.

*I wasn't really familiar with this whole internet saga, except that my student researchers happened to mention it. Not worth the brain space if you don't know what I'm referring to.

Yesterday I was in denial about the current wildfire smoke levels here, and the fact that I am Sensitive People. My body decided it would remind me at 2 am, when I woke up feeling rather terrible. So I finally buckled up, changed out the air filters in the smaller Honeywell room filter, got it running in the bedroom, and hastily constructed a Corsi-Rosenthal box for the house.

2:30 am Corsi-Rosenthal assembly

I'll tidy it up further eventually. It has some gaps that need to be filled. Unfortunately the box fan at home has the controls on the wrong side, and I do like to use that fan for other purposes.

Testing out the GVS Elipse P100 respirator for the commute to work:

The day's commute

I will say that the over-the-head style elastic is more comfortable than the over-the-ear. My glasses don't sit quite as nicely on top of this one. It feels a little freaky to be riding my bike wearing one of these, but at this point this is necessary if I want to go outside, so I'd better get used to it all.

I'm curious to know what other people do about the condensation buildup inside of these.

I should also add some sort of drinking straw modification.

I hauled in a second set of filters to construct a Corsi-Rosenthal box for work. My research students had never heard of them before, so I'll enlist their help with construction so they have this in their mental toolbox.

...the moment you take it off in your building at work, you can smell the smoke even inside the building.

I think this is actually my first smoke test with the O2. It worked wonderfully. In California, riding around with a valved N95 (pre-pandemic), I struggled to hold anything close to my usual bicycling pace. Commuting in to work today, I was able to hold a pace very close to my commuting pace.

I don't particularly love the earpieces, but I'm generally fussy about things over or in my ears. Over-ear things are tough because of eyeglasses.

...based on the amount of smoke inside the building at work, it's looking like a short workday. I'll just try and get the crickets and ants cleaned up, and will then head home. I managed to get all the windows except one closed at home, and cranked up the air filters. Hopefully when I get home Martha won't be sitting in the last open window and I can close it up as well.

Just another beautiful day in paradise, eh?
