-My grandpa had a stroke on Friday, has some pneumonia in both lungs, and is in the hospital these days. There isn't much more to say about things, but I may wind up going up to Seattle twice this spring (for that and for my BFF's wedding). He has been saying he's ready to die for a number of years now. I think we all just want to make sure he's comfortable and surrounded by loved ones, and I'm just glad every time that I have a chance to visit with him.

-One of my aunts (dad's sister) passed away from ovarian cancer last night. He has a large family (11 brothers and sisters), which has meant I haven't gotten to know everyone as well as I might like, but my aunt P stands out among all of them as a loving soul. I'm grateful that she has been surrounded by loved ones over the past two months as her health has declined rapidly. But even when you know the end is coming, it's not easy to come to terms with feelings about the world moving on.

-It's a minor thing in comparison, but my laptop may have just died as well. Hard to tell just yet. I'm relieved that I backed up everything this past Thursday, but I'm not looking forward to having to get things up and running on a replacement machine. And this also means limited internet access for a while. It's making me think I should get a fairly cheap desktop Linux machine up and running at home, just for the hell of it. I'm also so very, very relieved to NOT be in the financial situation I was in the last time I had to replace a laptop (the one that was burgled). It took me 6 months to save up for a replacement at that time.

So, I probably won't be on the internet much for the next couple of days.

Oh, man, that's way too much going on. I'm sorry and hope you're doing okay.

Thank you. I'm just kind of reeling at the moment. It's hard, feeling cut off from the internet and isolated while at home, and not yet knowing the computer's full diagnosis.

If you find yourself in a disaster sitch as regards computers, let me know. I have at least two old, beat-up laptops that can run xubuntu 12.10 or thereabouts without a problem.

Thank you so much for the offer! I finally got in to the local Mac store this morning and chatted with a sales associate who has the same model of MacBook Pro as I do (first generation). Based on the symptoms, she suspected a dead battery was causing hibernation problems, and knew the right kung-fu move to get the machine to wakey-wakey. So, I'm set for now. Of course, I also wound up forking over a ridiculous sum of money yesterday for a new/used machine (foreheadslap). But I think I'll keep the new machine so I have a spare for whenever this one eventually and thoroughly kicks the bucket.

I'm glad to hear that she could A: recognize the problem and B: fix it. Yay!

I read about your Aunt, oh man... it is just so sad. I felt so much for her daughter A. Because I know how much she has done for her kids over the years.

It *is* very sad for the family. My dad wrote some really nice things about some of the things his sister did for him when growing up that had a big impact on his life. I suspect sibling squabbles are inevitable in a family of that size, but she was one of the peacemaker siblings and will be remembered for her loving spirit. It's a hard time for my cousins, though.

Oh Rebecca. :( My condolences on your aunt - may the memory of her life and your interactions with her be a blessing.

Sending you internet hugs about your grandfather, and good wishes for an easy re-computering.

Call if you need anything.
