It started to rain last night. It has been months since it has rained here; the backyard has been turning into dust, and even the hardy trees have started to look drought-stressed. It's made me think about re-reading The Grapes of Wrath, now that I've been to Oklahoma and have better context for all of it.

I've forgotten how to bike-commute in the rain. I foolishly thought the rain was lightening up this morning as [livejournal.com profile] scrottie and I set out to meet up with friends at the Blue Baker for breakfast, so I didn't even bother to put on a rain jacket. The Jolly Roger has fenders, and I'd covered my pannier with its cover and my backpack with a plastic bag, so I was the only thing that got soaked. Unfortunately, I wore the waterproof leather shoes that tend to fill up with water when I bike in them, and fail to dry out. Time to stash some spare shoes at work, and just prepare to change clothes for rainy-day bike commuting. There have been a couple of occasions here where I've had to drape wet clothing all over the lab. The indignities of bicycle commuting.

[livejournal.com profile] scrottie heads back to Arizona tomorrow, to gear up for a busy month of bicycling festivities there. Having to say goodbye never gets any easier, does it. Then I'll turn to my own busy month of activities: back-to-back weekends with rowing events, a conference in Washington, DC, more rowing, job applications, and lots of experimental work.

I kind of prefer dreary weather. It's easier to stay inside and think, especially when the temperatures finally get below levels that cause my brain to melt (87 degrees or so, depending on humidity).

I love the entire-change-of-clothes-at-work plan. It's come in handy a number of times. The only problem is that even unworn clothes smell funny after about four months, so you need a rotation schedule.

I'm just thinking of carrying said clothes along with me on days when it rains...bike in spandex, then change into clothes that are a touch more appropriate for an academic working environment...

That's my second favorite sluggy of all time. (My third fave is about a week and a half later after the month attack, when he has to use his emergency pants.)
