The fall semester is in full swing, and that means the rowing team is back and up and running, which means my life and activities are changing, too. I'm grateful to have survived the summer, and found this summer much easier to handle than the previous one. It can be challenging to balance one's social calendar in a small city in the Republic of Texasland, especially when a big part of that social calendar involves intense periods of trying to keep up with high-octane undergraduates, and then other parts of that social calendar involve pretty limited spheres of activity, and not nearly enough time outdoors in beautiful places.
Maybe that's what made the difference - purposefully getting outside among the mountains in Washington. During the semester, the time out on Lake Bryan that helps me to recharge, too. It makes me amazed to realize that I've done a reasonably good job of keeping myself going in the gym, on the ergometer all summer. The erg is good exercise, sure, but it's so much better to hear the splash of water and feel the boat moving instead.
Here's hoping I can keep it all up while getting good science and writing and job applications done.
