I dropped [livejournal.com profile] scrottie off at the Taylor, TX train station yesterday afternoon so he could make his way back to Arizona. Then I pointed Lola's nose back towards Bryan/College Station and returned her to J and K's house just in time to put wheels on Froinlavin and bike up to meet people for a bike ride out to Hullabaloo Diner. The ride out is pretty simple and nice. We've been basically going directly there from the university campus, which makes for an 8-mile trip, about the right distance for working up a bit of an appetite. If the food and beer selection were slightly better, it would be almost like the old Car Resistance Action Party rides up to the Orange Table.

Today has been a fairly quiet day, as I assess how I want to manage things while I'm functionally single again. I spent the morning doing some miscellaneous cleaning and laundry, then made some cucumber salad (recipe below) and headed in to the lab for the day's cricket work. That accomplished, I picked up some groceries and headed back to the kitchen to cook up some of the things that have been accumulating.

I must confess I'm not a big fan of cherry tomatoes. If they're in a salad, I'll eat them, but I won't go out of my way to do so. Of course, out of all of the types of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes are the easiest to grow, and they sprouted up quite enthusiastically as volunteer plants in the garden. I'm left with a quandary - what to do with all of the cherry tomatoes. I recalled reading this recipe, and decided ehh, why not. While that baked away for an hour and forty minutes, I tucked a bunch of eggplant into the broiler, and made some baba ghanoush. I also started dough for even more no-knead bread, which I'll bake in the morning. And I made an experimental concoction.

Now, bed.

Melon
This year, the garden made useable melons. This one smelled luscious, and had nice texture, but the flavor was middling. Oh well, still refreshing.

Tomatoes
We have a few tomatoes going.

Kitten
Emma figured out how to nap on the roll-up futon.

Prizes
Fruits of the day's labor. Almost all of the cherry tomatoes went into the tart.

Cucumber Salad
Once upon a time, I made an incredibly delicious cucumber salad that miss Emma absolutely pigged out on. However, I somehow failed to note the recipe, and ever since then I've been wanting to re-make that first version. In the meantime, I've made another version that isn't nearly so satisfying. Here's what I've come up with so far for an okay version:

Ingredients
-A couple cucumbers - peeled, seeds scooped out, and diced
-Roughly equal parts feta cheese and yogurt
-A squeeze of some lemon
-Some red onion or shallots, finely chopped
-Sprigs of parsley, mint, and dill (or a bit of dried herbs if you lack fresh stuff)
-A drizzle of olive oil

This is pretty simple to assemble: mash up the feta cheese, mix it together with the yogurt, then add the lemon, onion, herbs, and olive oil. Last but not least, add the cucumber.
