A rainstorm on Wednesday night and Thursday morning finally sealed the end of the hot summer weather for the year. Unlike most other parts of the country, where this time of year is the winding-down of the growing season, around here, things are perking up and starting to flourish.

One of my broccoli plants managed to survive the entire summer, and has fresh, happy foliage. I never knew they were perennials. The loofah vine has a couple of flowers, and one volunteer squash plant is looking lush in the humid air. We've been getting a regular supply of small, apple-sized eggplants from the collection, the basil is still looking lush and perky, and the tomato plants have fresh flowers on them. The Swiss Chard bed has also survived quite nicely. We've got parsley and cilantro seedlings on their way, as well as some artichoke plants, mustard greens, lettuce, and more broccoli seedlings. I may make a run to Baker Nursery sometime soon to pick up a few other things, but in the meantime it's satisfying to see what we're able to produce.

And also in the meantime, we've got our work cut out for us with respect to eating up the contents of the canning cupboard:
