Burglary

On Saturday afternoon, somebody robbed our house. They took R's laptop computer, my computer (fifteen-inch Macintosh Powerbook G4), my non-functional Canon Powershot A80 camera, and my non-functional iPod Nano.

I haven't checked to see when I last backed up my computer, but I don't think this is a catastrophic loss. They did not take my passport, and I had my wallet with me.

I had been thinking that I was about due to replace my computer, and was coming to grips with not having a functional camera. The iPod stopped working months ago. It's going to be much harder to get things done without a functional computer, and I don't know when I'll be able to afford to replace it. Argh to that.

Apparently they started to take my fancy-schmancy road bike, but abandoned it in the front yard for some reason (perhaps the fact that I removed the pedals?). The Jolly Roger is fine, and R's bikes are fine, too.

That's all for now. I went mountain biking this weekend, and am covered in scratches and bruises. Plus I used up my helmet, and am glad for the existence of helmets.

Also: now I REALLY wish I had renter's insurance. I think I'll start that habit now.

It is indeed a good idea. My property manager actually requires us to have it in place as a precondition to moving in. If you can afford it, I suggest springing a bit extra for a low deductible. The $500 deductible on mine makes it non-worthwhile to report any of the things I've lost so far.

I'm sorry for you ordeal. It sounds like you're taking it well. It can feel very violating to be robbed like that, even if much of it was nonfunctional and even if you know they're just things.

Damn that sounds absolutely awful. I hope you are okay for the most part.

GROWL!! I'm glad the losses aren't TOO catastrophic, but burglaries outrage me. It's bad enough to lose your stuff (especially for a person like you, who is so judicious about acquiring stuff), but the breach of trust (the fuzzy, unspoken trust with humanity at large) really leaves me with negative feelings.

So sorry to hear about the robbery. Sam and I are particularly careful about locking our stuff up, since break-ins are pretty common around Durham.
Hooray for no bikes being stolen, though! Taking the pedals off is definitely a good idea. Bike co-op spends a lot of time removing pedals or removing the chains from bikes outside to keep people from getting very far. It seems to work, though we had several bikes stolen for last week.
Do you keep note of all your serial numbers, etc? We take photos periodically of our bike upgrades, to make it easier to describe/show to the police in case of theft.
