Milestones

This morning, while riding over to the grocery store for some supplies for a bike trip, my odometer crossed the 3000-mile mark for the year. My goal this year is to ride at least 6000 miles. Last year, I put in just over 5000 miles, so 6000 seems achievable, especially given my present progress. I think that 6000 miles will be a good annual goal from here on out as well. Putting in any additional mileage would mean committing too much additional time to riding my bike, and going above and beyond the kind of riding that I like to do (to the farmer's market, to other local destinations, etc). Altogether, that means I think I've put in around 13,000 miles on the Jolly Roger since I got it in 2005 (around 1000 miles in '05, 2000 miles on '06, 2000 miles in '07, and 5000 miles in '08; 3000 miles so far in '09; the first 3 years are all low estimates, though). Amazing.
This weekend, we'll be heading up to Flagstaff for an "epic" ride along sections of the Mogollon rim. I wish, once again, that my camera hadn't broken, but perhaps I'll have time to draw out a crude picture or two, and I'm sure that others will take photos. It's just not the same, though. I'm planning on updating with a couple of voice posts along the road as well, because those are always fun. Especially when the "auto-transcribe" function screws up. Alas, I will be riding Spud, my road bike, so all of those miles will be "garbage miles" that don't count towards my annual totals (Spud lacks an odometer). So it will be a low-mileage week on the Jolly Roger, probably under 100 miles. I can take some consolation from the fact that the prior two weeks were 200-plus weeks.
But before then, I need to: analyze more data, teach histology, pick up CSA vegetables, buy clay, go to ceramics, prep a bit more food, pack, and sleep.

please don't let them go to waste!
