This is mostly directed at family members and the like:

I am starting in on gift-making in ceramics. What sorts of ceramics items would you find the most useful? They can range from mugs, to whatever weird shape you've always wanted but have never gotten, to dishes that you can bake things in.

I've recently become obsessed with the third category, after making myself a giant octopus casserole/bread dish (photos when complete), an 8x8 brownie/cake pan, and a tart pan.

Anyway, I'd just love to hear ideas. Especially from you, Mom, and also from you, Rosemary. And it never hurts if you chime in, [livejournal.com profile] annikusrex. Not to mention you, K. Oh wow. I guess that means I expect at least 4 people to read my blog. Also: if you aren't listed, but have great ideas, I might just make that item for you. It can't hurt to ask! I reserve the right to make aforementioned item extremely quirky. Heh.

...jellyfish lamps are still an option, but I can't afford the associated hardware at the moment...

I keep wishing I had access to a ceramics studio so that I could make myself a range of handy bowls (large-ish serving bowls and the like), sushi trays, a mortar and pestle, containers for storing flour, pitchers, a butter dish, oh, there are so many little things I have wanted to make. Alas.

Well, that certainly gives me plenty of ideas! :) Time to get to work.

Oh yes, and midsize flowerpots are a big one. Also I think trivets could be made out of clay.

I love the honey pot you made for me. I didn't used to* eat much honey, but recently it's become a favored sweetener as I drink more tea.

*I wish I knew how to make that syntactically smoother. Aside from "I used to eat little..."

WEeeeeell, I know this isn't really directed at me, but the things that are currently awesome to me are pasta bowls (low, wide bowls), pots with matching dish underneath in which to put potted plants, and smallish dishes of unusual shape -- the kind that you would put keys and your wallet in, or odds and ends on the dresser.

It's always the bowls, isn't it? Maybe I'll just have to add you to the list! :)

Haha, I know, I know. The endless bowls. :)

Ceramics ideas

Now, this is a tough one. I REALLY LIKE that tea-pot that WON'T pour; and I would LOVE one that WOULD pour (for my herbal teas). I know that a lot of effort went into tea-pot #1 and that tea-pot making is very challenging. Otherwise I also like beautiful pots for plants, but not in the "too small" sizes.....

Heh, well, making teapots is pretty fun. Stay tuned, Mom, and I'll keep those things in mind. :) I think I need some kind of angled dental drill (actually, I think they make dremels of the sort I'm thinking of) to get the non-pouring teapot to work. I think it's possible...but then again, that's what I thought on attempt #5847 of the mug I made for dad. I guess some things aren't meant to be.

ramekins for creme brulee! and do you have access to the dec 2008 saveur? on p.19 there's an assortment of earthenware cooking vessels from around the world that you might find inspiring. i love the mug you gave me, by the way, i make tea in it all the time.

Thanks for the tip! Hmm, I will have to track down a copy of it. I'm glad you're enjoying the mug! It was so beautiful it had to be given to someone who would use it regularly.

um...just in case

While you didn't specifically ask for my request, I'll make one just in case, as I do so love receiving your handiwork (particular when it is utilitarian).

I would like a larger/deeper planter for the herbiage growing, and/or a delightfully deep casserole dish (like for a pasta bake). I hadn't realized you could do the latter, but I love the idea of serving up a hot bubbling crock of something in a handmade vessel.

What kind of glazes do you use for food stuff?

FYI - erged 3 days this week - planning to hit the H2O when I get back in town.

Oh yes, you are definitely on the list! It sounds like I might be making a bunch of flowerpots this go around. :) I'll certainly make 'un for you!

The casserole dishes are kind of tricky, but I'll definitely keep it in mind, too.

All of the glazes that are available at the Tempe ceramics studio are food-safe. The only thing that isn't food-safe is un-glazed clay (too porous--stuff gets trapped in it and starts to grow).

Nice work on the erging! Definitely time to get back on the water (although of course by now it's starting to get annoyingly hot--maybe I should just plan to "accidentally" fall in on a regular basis...).
