In lieu of more text, photographs from my recent Berkeley travels are below the cut.

But first, a preview and brief explanation: in Australia, my brother and I got the idea to take photographs of ourselves juxtaposed with artwork, imitating the facial expressions of the figures in the portrait. On Sunday, we visited the Albany Bulb, the park where my brother has done a lot of his field work. It's a fairly old park, built on top of a capped landfill, and has been shelter for many homeless people. Over time, the contents of the landfill have been exposed to the elements--great heaps of concrete and rebar and hubcaps--and many of the homeless and visitors to the park have turned this junk into sculptures. The park is quite peaceful, full of non-native plants and the smell of the bay, as well as the usual people walking their dogs and teenagers looking for a spot to get drunk or high.

That's really fascinating and inspiring that random visitors to the former landfill would express their creativity in such a way! The sculptures are pretty neat, too. Particularly that very first one you put above the cut. He looks pensive, and he also looks like one of those anatomy paintings of someone with no skin, only muscles.

Those sculptures are pretty neat. Trash=art. Irony.

Police bikes exempt. Well, yeah, they're exempt anyway. We've got a sign here "No Parking, except police." God the temptation to spray paint something like "Duh." I'm surprised it hasn't been done already, especially in this town.
