I think I am about to give in to pressure to join the miasmal world of Facebook.

*quickly tries to neatly stack-o-fy piles of internets in corners to give the semblance of tidy internet presence*

This means that undergraduates will be able to find me, as they found D. This also means that old college and high school pals will be able to find me. I'm not sure I'm ready for the half-assedness of the whole deal (seriously, if we aren't already somehow in touch, what will we do or say now that will change our lives or the world?). We shall see. I'll go at it with the goal of having a small and meek presence. Yeah, right.

I've learned to trust my feelings of ambivalence about these sorts of things. I feel quite differently about this blog; it is a cultivated presence.

eta: Oh brother. It's irksomely over-widgeted. You can probably find me there now, but I'm just about done with the business already.

I am avoiding facebook. I am turning into the grumpy old lady of the internet. Not to mention I kinda like to just hang out one place and keep things tidy.

Yeah, see, that's the biggest drawback. It appears that it will effectively suck up any spare time I imagined I ever had. But OTOH, it's a REALLY great way to share pictures, apparently.

I'm loving the icon.

Facebook doesn't have to eat all your spare time. I don't find it the addictive pastime that many of my friends do. It took a bit more time at the start, as I looked through my friends' friendlists for other people I knew; that may be the biggest time sink. But I just check the site once a day now, if that. All of my university buddies were glad to friend me, but few of them have anything to say or do with me beyond using me to inflate the number of friends they can boast about, so my visits don't take more than 5 minutes or so.

The main aspect of Facebook that is probably going to occupy most of my time is the picture-posting and sharing aspect, but you're probably right that it will initially be a timesink, and eventually will settle down to hopefully much less of a timesink than a certain blog (oh, but what a wonderful timesink it is!).

I just don't get into the whole "next big thing" mentality. I am able to combine aspects of Flickr into my journal. It keeps everything put together without making it seem cluttered. So much clutter on the internet.

How strange, I've just started using it recently myself, even after having an account open for more than a year.

I used to share your cynicism of using networking sites to regain contact with old friends, but at the moment I have a friend crashing on the couch in my livingroom with whom I worked 6 years ago for 7 weeks at a summer program for high school students. He's a really cool person who I didn't bother to keep in touch with, but we linked to each other on facebook, and when he was in DC he emailed me and asked me to lunch. Then I found out that he was virtually homeless for 2 weeks (in between a trip to germany and spending the summer studying russian at middlebury) so i let him surf on over to my couch.

All because of facebook. Pretty groovy.
