My eyes are rolling so far back in my head I'm afraid they're gonna get stuck.

You see, fixies have invaded the coffeeshop where I'm attempting to get some work done. Fixies--you know, those fixed-gear track bikes that are uber-popular among hipsters. Actually, they've taken over the parking lot outside of the coffeeshop.

Now, I'm all for more bikers and fewer (not less) cars. But seriously? I'm not all that convinced that these people are in it for any such reason. I'm not sure they they're really interested in alternative transportation, or in much beyond seeing who can have the cooler cool toy, really. Whether it's a hipster bike or a hair-do or clothing style or iPod or whatever. It can be cute, how Phoenix-area hipsters get really really ridiculously enthusiastic about these things (I know, enthusiastic hipsters seem like an oxymoron to many of you people living elsewhere; you have to see it to believe it). But still.

Freaks. Sheesh. I've got to say, for long bike rides, there's something to be said for freewheels, hub gears, and brakes.

all the way to peoria via phoenix, with stops at various places of libation and ill repute. and then back again!

and we all did it. well, actually the guys riding their road bikes petered out and turned back once we got to the george and dragon. (to be fair we had been riding amidst the post suns game and first friday traffic for a couple hours at that point)

Unfortunately what you're saying about fixies doesn't surprise me. I've noticed there seems to be among a lot of cyclists this competitive mindset, in an unhealthy way. It seems to be either who can have the lightest and most technologically advanced (and most expensive) stuff, or who can ride the fastest, or who can ride the farthest, or who can be the weirdest and have the most gimmicks concerning their bike and themselves...

The way I look at it there is only one Lance Armstrong and the last time I checked I'm not him. I just don't have time to try to do all that crap. And I've ridden my bicycle on an unsupported group ride of ten people from Seattle to New York, so maybe it's just that I don't feel I need to prove anything any more.

I'm planning to ride with the local cycling club this year, and I'm planning to hang out at the back. Those gay guys can battle it out at the front. No offense but women tend to not be at the front and frankly one of the reasons I'm planning to join the cycling club is to check out the scenery.

Anyway, what's the difference between less and fewer?
