She swallowed a goat to catch the dog...

During this morning's row, I swallowed a fly. Actually, I inhaled it. It was not a pleasant experience, and I'm still suffering from repercussions. Don't do this at home, folks.
I brought a couple of cupcakes from Lulu's to our lab meeting--they lived in the refrigerator overnight. They tasted much better cold. The frosting's consistency just wasn't right at room temperature. They still weren't incredible, but as I said, good pastries are hard to come by around here, so they'll have to do for now...
Tomorrow I'm going to be running a chemical analysis in the afternoon. Basically, it will allow me to measure the phosphorus content of a bunch of ants. Ahh, chemistry. So much fun. Lab coats and nitrile gloves and test tubes and pretty colors and everything. It's SCIENCE! It will be nice to FINALLY start collecting data.
Today I had another one of those "Why didn't I get ____ done yet?" moments. It had to do with taking care of the ants, or, rather, not taking better care of them. Earlier at our lab meeting, my advisor strongly implied that she retains primary ownership of all of my leafcutter colonies. Technically, she's correct. This arises largely because she wants to give one of the colonies away as a thank you gift to someone. Personally, I see this as wasteful. I have put an incredible amount of energy into getting each of my ant colonies where it is today--it has been over a year since I collected their queens off the ground in Tucson. Each week one of my helpers or I must go out and get food for them, yadda yadda yadda. And I just know that if I give a colony away, the recipient won't have a clue about how to take care of it. This is especially true of the leafcutter colonies, and remains true for the seed-harvester colonies as well. Seriously, they're my children. All 523 thousand of them.
I just *know* that when I graduate and leave ASU, any colonies that I leave behind are doomed. So I'd rather figure out how to negotiate to take them with me. It's an odd dilemma.

Date: 2006-09-21 06:35 pm (UTC)Too late, unfortunately, though technically I didn't do it at home but on the lake. I think K was worried about the repercussions - I wasn't coughing *that* badly though, really.
Speaking of which , ahem. And I quote: "Oh, yeah, you guys should row Tuesday! I'll definitely be out there that day!" Ahem again.
