The northeastern US is having a heat wave, with daily high temperatures in the 90's at least through the weekend. This morning when I biked in to campus, it was 82 degrees but with 67% humidity, reminiscent of summer mornings in Texas.

One difference, however, is that almost all homes in Texas have central air conditioning. On the other hand, from the sound of things Texas is struggling as much as here to keep up with power demand during heat waves.

Not the most pleasant way to live.

Yesterday, I left work earlier than usual because my building was switched over to generator power in the late afternoon to help reduce the college's impact on the anticipated strain on the local energy grid during the high heat. When my building is on generator power, the airflow rates are lower than what's considered acceptable for a workplace building, so we were informed that the building was closed. Of course, I only learned this when I sat back down in front of my computer and checked my email ~30 minutes after the closure time, because I'd been taking care of the insects in the insect room up until then.

So I thought I'd probably wind up heading home early again today, for the same reason. Well, turns out the joke is on me! Today we had a water main break somewhere on campus, so there's no running water in our building, and several other buildings as well.

It sure feels like the world is trying to sabotage my efforts to write manuscripts right now.

I guess I will have to try working from home for now, sigh.
