Ocean Life
Oct. 10th, 2021 03:34 pmOn Friday, I helped a colleague transport her class to Groton, Connecticut for a field trip to sample and explore invertebrate biodiversity.
It was a fun trip, especially because I didn't have to be in charge!
Since I didn't have to be in charge, I took a zillion photos instead. Here's the full album, where I documented our surveying and sampling in a rocky intertidal zone, on mud flats, at night, and out on a teaching and research vessel in Long Island Sound. Too many photos for a blog post.

I'm going to ask my colleague to help ID some of the critters I'm less familiar with.
Oh, as a bonus, we got to watch a giant Lasius mating swarm at the beginning. I wound up deciding to collect some queens and males so I can practice identifying them.
I was also quite pleased to have been the person to have found a moon snail, because they are pretty nifty predatory critters:

Check out that massive foot!
The moon snail and a handful of other critters have come back to the tank in the lab. We'll see how long we can keep them going.
We were so fortunate to have absolutely beautiful weather, too.
