The crows gather in Troy
Jan. 26th, 2020 10:57 amTwice this past week after work I rode Frodo up to Troy to our rowing club's indoor winter training facility. Both times, as I rode, I passed by a large Gathering of the Crows. Gatherings always transport me back to Seattle, for the Washington State Arboretum is a major Gathering of the Crows destination in the Seattle area.
The crows are a reminder that other animals operate on other schedules, with different priorities. We don't always know all the details they share with each other when they gather, but there they are, home again, with each other.
It rained yesterday, fairly hard rain. Not like Seattle winter rain.
Not too long ago, I learned about an open-water human-powered watercraft race that goes from Tacoma, WA, up to Port Townsend, in early June. Seventy miles in under 48 hours (https://seventy48.com/race-explained/). After all the time spent sailing and kayaking around the Puget Sound in high school, I'd love an excuse to go back.
The Hudson River is an ideal place to prepare for something like this, because it's possible to do practice rows or paddles of any distance, and the Hudson is also a commercial waterway. (I'm leaving myself open to either rowing or paddling for something like this).
The timing might interfere with my plans to be in Arizona for June and July, however. I need to keep thinking about it.
