Mugs, plus ~too~much~energy~
Apr. 3rd, 2009 08:30 amOver this past week, I've spent a lot of time contemplating beverage containers. Last Friday, I accidentally left my favorite mug at a seminar. One of my friends was kind enough to grab it for me, but then apparently he lost it somewhere between his office and home. I think I'd had that mug for a couple of years at least. It was a stainless-steel affair, nice and compact with a carabiner for a handle and a lid that would screw completely closed. I liked it so much that I got one for my dad, to replace the plastic travel mug he had been taking everywhere (and I think he likes it as well). I've been feeling a bit lost without it, so I went ahead and ordered a new one yesterday.
Yesterday morning, while washing dishes, I accidentally dropped my favorite ceramic mug on the floor, and it broke. It was a gift from my father and was decorated with images of caffeine molecules. It was just the right size for my morning latte. So when I went to ceramics last night, I spent the evening throwing mugs out of porcelain. I'm going to try and make a bicycle stencil so I can decorate the porcelain with bicycles. It's a beautiful clay, though quite hard to work with.
About a month ago, I lost my favorite stainless-steel water bottle. It had been a kind of pricey impulse purchase, but it was one of those things that became an instant favorite, carried everywhere. I don't feel like I can completely justify the purchase of a replacement, seeing as I own several other perfectly functional water bottles, but it might be worth it if the right water bottle ensures that I drink enough water over the hot hot summer. I'm finding that I just don't like plastic.

Other than all that randomness, it has been a rough week as far as health/sleep/exercise go. Last weekend definitely took a lot out of me, especially because the intense ride was followed by a couple of nights of not-quite-enough sleep. By yesterday, I was finally rested enough, but then K wasn't feeling good this morning. So I'm a bit keyed up this morning for lack of rowing (but really, that's my own fault for not going to the gym instead). I'll ride out to downtown Phoenix this evening, so everything will work out okay anyway (although at this point, a 20-mile round-trip ride is small potatoes). I think that all of my intensive bicycle-riding this spring has put me in basically the best shape I've ever been in my entire life. The only downside is that if I don't keep it up, I get really wound up because my body is so accustomed to moving all of the time. All things considered, this is a good problem to have.
