Lost items [stuff, things]
Oct. 3rd, 2022 08:29 pmI've lost two items recently that are vexing.
One, the left-handed Swiss army knife I've had for well over a decade. It normally lives in my lunchbox. I have no idea where it got lost. I can't seem to find other left-handed Swiss army knives easily on the internet. Very frustrating.
Also, one of my lighter-weight winter gloves. I have a better idea of when I lost it - last Friday, but can't pinpoint exactly where it went missing. Somewhere between the boathouse and the coffeeshop that morning. Also vexing because this is exactly the weather where I'd like to be wearing those gloves. My next set of gloves is still slightly too warm, and fingerless gloves are slightly too cold.
I hate it when stuff goes missing.

Date: 2022-10-04 02:16 am (UTC)The left-handed knives were made by Wenger, rather than Victorinox, and since Victorinox bought out the Wenger knife division, I don't believe those knives are still in production. (They're all listed as "retired/rare", which is not auspicious; "Wenger left-handed" gets two (2) hits on ebay.) There are some left-handed folders -- Spyderco does a leftie PM2 -- but yargh.
I hope you find it!

Date: 2022-10-04 02:40 pm (UTC)If you're contemplating prices like that, what's the primary use?
"Lunchbox" makes me think "apple slicer", in which case there are a bunch of Spyderco folding knives that open with a thumb hole and are ambidextrous to that extent. (I can open mine left handed no problem, though if you're into one-hand closing they're not necessarily as ambidextrous in that respect.) A subset of those are designed to not corrode in a marine environment -- hence the "Salt" series name -- and they make reasonable folding food knives.
I'd maybe look at the Atlantic Salt though the price-no-object recommendation is the Spydiechef, arguably the best EDC pocket knife ever made.
(The French Baroudeur and Bivouac knives, still available despite no longer being Armée de la Terre issue, are designed to be folding food knives. But they are in no way left-hand-use friendly, and they're not small.)
The useful-widgets part might be achievable through a Nextool mini which has the virtue of useful scissors, being tiny, and having an excellent value proposition. The SOG Power Litre has a corkscrew; the SOG Power Pint doesn't, but both are mid-sized multitools -- meaning a roughly 50mm knife blade -- with better opening mechanisms than finger nicks. And being SOG, you could rearrange the tools somewhat if you wanted.
Or the new Leatherman P2 or P4 tools might be OK by themselves; they've had a lot of design work go into them to make them one-hand usable, though they're not especially free of bias. (Where the knife blade is, for example, is kinda inherently right hand biased.)
And I should probably shut up now, because this is likely too much enthusiasm already.

Date: 2022-10-04 05:30 pm (UTC)I keep a Leatherman in my pannier, but I don't tend to fish it out quite as often and prefer to not use its knife for food applications.
It's hard to not geek out about knives and multitools! So many fun and handy pointy bits!

Date: 2022-10-04 05:46 pm (UTC)Oh lord, left-handed can opener. That's a challenge.
https://www.leftyslefthanded.com/left_handed_pocket_and_utility_knives_s/78.htm has the picture, and the page still exists:

Might be worth poking them, though I couldn't express much optimism.
Similarily https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/swiss-army-pocket-knives.htm?handedness=left-handed is a lot of hits, but I am not confident they're useful.
