Am I the only person who hates Giving Tuesday?

I am not against making financial contributions to charitable organizations.

I just don't like that this has been turned into an Advertising Thing. I see it as feeding the organizations that are big and stable enough to have some form of fundraising and advertising budget, at the expense of organizations that aren't.

I've always had my pet charities and give only to those.

What happens with Giving Tuesday is that we get bombarded with email advertisements from every charitable organization we've ever interacted with in the slightest.

Not to mention it makes it seem like giving is only for special occasions. Most organizations, especially smaller ones, benefit more from regular recurring donations than unpredictable annual amounts.

I hate it, too.

And I donate a fair proportion of my overall income.

I like when they do Matching Donations so that when we donate to the food bank it gets matched by John's employer AND matching donor. We end up "giving" 120 meals a month.

Meanwhile, my workplace tries to hit me up for money. I guess that's what I get for working in the educational sector.

My favorite response to that is easy. “Feel free to donate on my behalf. Or pay me more.”

We have Colorado Gives Day the Tuesday after that because we are apparently scrooges here so we have to be reminded to give a lot.

I don't hate-hate it, but I give it the same heavy side-eye as Valentine's Day and the holiness of churches, for setting aside into a box a behavior that should never be limited.

i like it. good reminder. people share their idiosyncratic favorites on social media. but i am very busy and distracted.
