I'm coming to agree with [personal profile] mallorys_camera about this being a rather drab autumn. I'd been holding out hope for one particular maple tree along my commuting route that turned a gloriously incandescent orange last fall, but when I biked past it today, its leaves were all off already. Whumph.

*Some* trees do have *some* color this year; it just isn't quite the same sort of resplendent color show of some other autumns.

Our morning rowing practices are getting to be darker and darker, as they do, this time of year. The city finally did at least fix the lights along the path, and even added spotlights towards the boat ramp and our docks. The lights are making a huge difference, at least. It's creepy when you can't see where you're going on the dock.

Temperatures were still warm this morning, and the water was calm, so it was a great morning to be out. By the end of practice, the sky had begun to lighten. At first I thought it was going to be just another gray fall day, the dawn just barely distinguishable from the dark by a matter of degree, but right when I got back to the dock, there was a brief 5-minute window when the streak of clouds in the sky lit up golden-pink and the calm waters of the Hudson reflected the colors back up to the sky.

Of course, I never have any kind of camera with me during those moments, so you'll just have to imagine it. There have also been a number of recent occasions where I've been able to catch the afternoon horizontal light on the trees and buildings, which has its own charms, too. It all counts for something, as far as I'm concerned.

It's funny how last year, more than anything I wanted to add more lights to the front porch, but now this year I'm adding more dark, shadowy things instead.
